Fash-index: AW12

It’s the last bank holiday of the year, and the roll down to Christmas starts here… I know I said the C word! And, in typical British tradition it’s going to rain all day today, so there’s no need to spend it preparing that BBQ that you had planned.

Instead, use the extra day off as an opportunity to stay in bed and shop online for essential autumn-wear. Here are a few recommendations:

Coats – Unfortunately, coats are a must-have in the UK. It makes sense to start thinking about this, because even if you’re not cold now you will be soon.

Burberry has produced definitive designs again for winter, with studded coats and leather jackets. The Crepe Wool Tailored Coat, with its double breasted front and detailed buttons, is ideal for anyone who wants to stay warm and look smart. Of course, the trench coat is an obvious choice for autumn and a classic Burberry style.

Opt for oversized coats for maximum impact. You can discover beautiful shapes on the high street from ASOS and Topshop. But for a real British finish choose one of Barbour’s thick winter-warming designs. The Maple Wool Coat is to die for with its quilted cuffs and wax side panels!

Boots – The only way to make sure that your feet stay dry is to invest in a smart pair of boots. Chelsea and brogue boots are great for the autumn, you can get them in a variety of colours and they look smart with any suit for the office.

The rock-chick biker boots are a huge trend this autumn. Kurt Geiger and Topshop have introduced studded flat boots that will complement the winter floral dresses and the androgynous clothing styles that we’ll all be wearing come October. They are my footwear essential and the only item that I’ll consider for my feet this winter.

What are your must-haves for autumn?
