Bake sales are a popular way to raise money for charity. It costs very little to buy all of the ingredients and very few people can resist a delicious chocolate brownie or mouth-watering piece of cake.
I am planning another delicious bake sale in my office and this time I’d like to make a stripy cake. Why? Because it tastes oh-so-good and it looks great too!
Fancy making a stripy cake? Try my recipe below…
To make this cake you will need: butter, 4 large free-range eggs, 250g golden caster sugar, 100ml milk, 250ml sunflower oil, 1 tsp vanilla extract, 475g self-raising flour, 1 tsp baking powder and 25g cocoa powder.
To start preheat the oven to Gas 4 and grease a cake tin with butter so it doesn’t stick to the edges.
Then put all of the eggs and sugar into a large bowl with the milk, oil, vanilla extract and add 175g of the flour. Whisk it all up (cheat and use a hand whisk, I do) for a minute or two, until your mixture is lump free.
You will then need to pour half of the mixture into a separate bowl and stir in ½ tsp baking powder and 175g flour and set aside. In another bowl, mix the cocoa powder with 125g flour and ½ tsp baking powder and whisk it all up.
Now it’s time to make it all pretty. Spoon two tablespoons of the plain mixture into the centre of the cake tin. Straight away spoon two tablespoons of the chocolate mixture on top. Continue doing this until all the mixture has been used – you will end up with lots of alternate rings of mixture in the tin. Don’t worry if it’s not meant to be neat.
Finally, cook your mixture for 40-50 minutes or until the cake is cooked through. Then remove it from the oven and turn the cake out onto a wire rack to cool before serving.
To make sure you make the most out of your office bake sale (money that is) read my tips below.
- Find an area in our office that people have a walk past – reception is a place to start.
- Start your sale around lunch time so people are hungry but try to get them before they head out to buy their lunch.
- Presentation is everything. You have to have a clean and neatly presented table to make a sale – your cakes should also look appetising!
- Make sure you have a good variety of cakes. It may shock you but not everyone likes chocolate so make a few carrot cakes or a nice Madeira sponge too.
