With only 10 weeks to go until the festive season begins it is time to start food smart. Check out these easy food swaps that’ll save calories in the slim down to Christmas…

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day so make it count by switching from whole milk to 1% fat or even skimmed milk and avoid sugar-coated breakfast cereal, instead try whole grain breakfast cereal such as porridge or shredded whole grain wheat cereal with no added sugar.

Don’t sprinkle of sugar on your breakfast cereal if you need a topping use fresh or dried fruit which counts towards one of your five a day – bonus!

It’s easy to make a mistake at lunchtime, so try to prepare your food the night before so you’re not tempted to snack on naughty foods. Avoid white breads, bagels and muffins and enjoy whole grain varieties. When it comes to butter and cheese in your jacket potato swap them for reduced fat spread and reduced salt and sugar baked beans.

If you’ve been good all day there is no need to cut corners when you get home. Simply, swap creamy or cheesy sauces for tomato- or vegetable-based sauces on your pasta, meat or fish dishes. Enjoy low-fat spread on mashed potato made and choose leaner cuts of meat: for example, swap streaky bacon for back bacon.

And here are a few clever drink swaps too…

Swap a Strawberry and mango margarita (350 calories) for a Mojito (215 calories) and save 135 calories or a Leffe Blonde (200 calories) for a Budweiser (150 calories) and save 50 calories!

If you normally love a good Mai Tai cocktail (310 calories) switch it for a Cosmopolitan cocktail (170 calories) and save 140 calories – don’t worry you can indulge again over the festive period.
