It’s time to take to the TV to learn a little more about how to look after your body. Channel 4 are launching a new series tonight called “health freaks” which is all about quick health fixes and old wives tales. Here are a few to keep you going until tonight’s program.
So you’re suffering from toothache…it’s time to get out the horseradish. Grate a little horseradish and apply to the gums near the aching tooth.
If you have started to come down with a cold and you’re feeling your throat tighten then try to eat bay leaves; The leaves have anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties so they are perfect for a sore throat. You can also enjoy lots of hot water with lemon and honey.
Cramp is awful so any old wives’ tale is worth a try when this sets in. According to friends of mine a small bottle of tonic water each evening can keep this at bay. It contains quinine, which gives it a bitter taste and seems to decrease the excitability of nerves.
And finally one of my favourite tales, which I think really works is the use of bananas for headaches. The magnesium helps relax blood vessels. But if you can’t stand the taste of bananas simply mash one up and wear it as a face mask!
Are there any old wives’ tales that you swear by?
